The Organic Consumers Association is working with farmers, consumers, and companies to promote organics and Fair Trade in the clothing sector in Organic Empowerment 2010, a strategic local campaign. CFAC is a “campaign to raise awareness about the negative health and environmental effects of conventional and genetically engineered cotton and the institutionalized exploitation of clothing sweatshops.
By uniting organic consumers, anti-genetic engineering activists, trade unionists, religious social justice advocates, progressives in the fashion & apparel industry, and the Fair Trade / anti-sweatshop communities into a potent force we can change the dynamics of the marketplace and fundamentally alter public policy.”
The Clothes for a Change Campaign Is Demanding that Major Clothing Retailers & Manufacturers:
Stop using genetically engineered cotton.
Start blending in certified organic or “transition to organic” cotton in their clothing.
Guarantee that they meet independently verified Fair Labor (non-sweatshop) standards.
Eliminate all production and export cotton subsidies in the U.S. and convert to Green subsidies for organic and transition to organic cotton production.
The Organic Conumers Association and the Clothes For A Change campaign urges you to making sure that our government contracts for goods and services prioritize organic, fair trade and union made products. In the course of one’s lifetime, one comes across many things that are emblazoned in our memory: a person, a song or poem, a place. Then there are certain special events that one can never forget. The Oregon Country Fair is such an event: a Magical Mystery Tour that happens on the second weekend of July each year (since 1969). There is music, art, crafts, but most of all there are wonderful beautiful people who leave their inhibitions at home and come to the Fair completely free and full of fun. 50,000 of them, or more, with no other expectations than to see what this year’s Fair will bring. Deep in the Oregon woods, Magic happens at this Fair.
Organic Apparel is extremely proud to be the Fair’s official Apparel vendor for both commemorative sales and the several thousand volunteers who proudly wear our shirts. Each garment is printed with environmentally respectful water base inks, with serious attention paid to the amazingly detailed art that embellishes them. This year was even more fantastic than any of the years before; they seem to get better each year. Next year we hope to see you at the Fair. www.oregoncountryfair.org
